Prosecutors approved 5,000 arrests in 2018
Chinese prosecutors sued more than 8,000 people in intellectual property cases and approved the arrest of more than 5,000 suspects of IP crimes in 2018, Zheng Xinjian, a senior official from the Supreme People's Procuratorate, said on Friday. In 2014, Chinese prosecutors began an operation targeting crimes against food and drug safety.

Artificial intelligence zone opened in city
A national development and experimental zone of next-generation artificial intelligence has been launched in the city, according to Beijing Science & Technology Commission. The new zone will boost research in AI, foster and attract professionals and apply AI technologies to projects. It will also create a coordinated innovation system involving industry, academia, government, education and finance. In addition, the zone will explore new models of innovation development and encourage AI integration into daily life, local officials said.

Record in intellectual property disputes
Data from the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration show that the People's Mediation Committees in the city handled nearly 2,160 IP disputes in 2018, a record high. Of them, 69.4 percent have been settled. Copyright disputes took the lion's share of the cases that the committees dealt with - about 80.4 percent. The committees, at various districts in the city, were founded in 2015 and are made up of IP attorneys, retired judges, government officials and teachers.

Focus on agriculture, trademarking goods
The Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region has rolled out a new policy to boost high-quality development of its agriculture. It will emphasize building up local brands of grain, fruits and vegetables. The goal is to create 200 geographical indication trademarks in 2020. GI is used on products that have a specific origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that.

Artists behind surge in copyright applications
The province's copyright registrations hit a new high last year, surpassing 96,180 - a 41.1 percent surge from 2017. Of them, nearly 81 percent were artistic creations, including paintings, calligraphy works and sculptures. Music and songs accounted for 11.7 percent of registrations. The rest were literary works, movies, videos and photos. The largest filer was Fuzhou, capital of the province. It contributed 41 percent of the total registrations, followed by Quzhou and Xiamen. The three cities accounted for a combined 94.5 percent of the province's copyright registrations.

Thousands of people enjoy cultural gala
Performing troupes from Zhejiang province showcased traditional heritage during a tour of Taiwan's Nantou county from Feb 20 to 24. The first leg at Caotun township attracted an audience of nearly 10,000. Crowds were delighted and entertained at the intangible cultural heritage. It featured Baiye Dragon from Changxing county, a dancing dragon decorated with artificial lotus petals; Nine-Lion Dance from Yongkang city, a traditional dance of nine rope-controlled lion props; and Wuju Opera from Jinhua city.
