Technology helps visually impaired shop online

On our Sina Weibo

Engineers from e-commerce giant Alibaba have been improving a technology called optical character recognition to help visually impaired people shop online. The software enables users to take a picture of text, and have the app read it back through the device's screen reader. For example, you can take a picture of an item on Taobao and have it read aloud by your smartphone. China has more than 17 million visually-impaired people.
