Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.

Since 1984, with government funding and administrative support, China has built 220 national key laboratories, which serve as key bases for the country's basic as well as frontier scientific research.

An item from Nov 30, 1989, in China Daily showed that more than 200 Chinese doctoral degree holders from developed countries worked in 27 national key laboratories at the time.
