Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.
An item from Nov 28, 1993, in China Daily showed that the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, the first commercial nuclear power station in the Chinese mainland, was under construction.
With the deepening of reform and opening-up, Guangdong province faced huge challenges in its economic growth due to electricity shortages. In order to tackle the problem, the construction of the plant was started on Aug 7, 1987, and completed on May 6, 1994.
