This Day, That Year

Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.

On Oct 31, 1999, the International Horticultural Expo closed in Kunming, Yunnan province, as seen in an item from China Daily. It was the first time that the event had been hosted in China.

Under the theme of "Man, nature and machine in the 21st century", the 187-day expo attracted 9.5 million visitors from home and abroad.
