Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.
An item from China Daily showed a ceremony to mark the completion of construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in Lhasa, capital of the Tibet autonomous region, on Oct 15, 2005.
Hailed as a landmark project in the government's plans to develop China's western regions, the railway involved total investment of 28.5 billion yuan ($4 billion). It is the world's highest and longest plateau railroad and also the first to connect Tibet with the rest of China.
