Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.
The country's first international auction was held in Beijing on Oct 11, 1992.
An item from China Daily showed a blue-and-white vase made during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and a jadeite pipa - a traditional Chinese stringed instrument - for sale at the auction, which included 2,188 Chinese antiques. The total turnover reached 3 million yuan (equal to about $540,000 at the time).
