NCA talks with video portals
The National Copyright Administration had talks with major video portals in mid-September to encourage them to increase copyright awareness. The enforcement officials requested that the 15 streaming service platforms improve the management of online copyrighted content, pay attention to dealing with complaints against piracy and take action to prevent infringements. In particular, blockbuster movies, TV series or music listed for priority protection and pre-warning by the National Copyright Administration needed to be given special attention, the officials said.

Interest in new plants grows fast
An expert group focusing on vegetable technologies at the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants, also known as UPOV, held a key meeting in Beijing on Monday. Applications for new plant varieties in agriculture topped 3,840 in China last year, enabling the country to outgrow the European Union and become the largest filer of new plant varieties among UPOV members.

Boom in online literature
By the end of 2017, some 16.47 million online literature works had been created in China, nearly 1,200 of them adapted to movies, more than 1,230 to TV dramas, over 600 to gaming and 712 to animation, according to a recent report. The report, on China's online literature development, was released at an identically themed summit in Beijng on Friday. Realism is a keyword on the country's online literature landscape, with more than half of the creations revolving around "realistic themes", the report found.

Cultural heritage on show at expo
A national intangible cultural heritage expo which opened in Ji'nan, capital of Shandong province on Sept 13, showcased an array of traditional craftsmanship items. The five-day event featured sections of silk, embroidery and dyeing; ceramics and metallurgy; tea and alcohol making; printing, carving and painting; furniture and stationery; traditional Chinese medicine and sculpture. A series of events designed for local communities, schools, scenic sites and shopping malls enabled Ji'nan residents to have the opportunity to experience the heritage.

IP-collateralized loans surge
Companies across Jiangsu have secured intellectual property-collateralized loans worth 15 billion yuan ($2.2 billion) in total over the past five years, according to the provincial IP office. The provincial authorities are encouraging financial service providers to launch more financing products, helping local small businesses to turn their IP assets into capital. Their goal is to provide 10 billion yuan in IP-collateralized loans to more than 1,000 small businesses in 2020.
