Dalian, Liaoning province, has always been the fashion frontier in northeastern China.

In September 1988, the first Dalian International Fashion Festival, one of the country's oldest fashion fairs, was held in the city. At the time there was an almost uniform style of dress - shades of gray, blue and green on streets across the country.
