SIPO cracks down on online fakes
The State Intellectual Property Office has initiated a four-month-long operation targeted at counterfeits and infringements in the e-commerce sector, starting this month. SIPO ordered its branches across the country to enhance regulation of sales on online trading platforms and crack down upon severe IP infringements. SIPO said it will conduct random inspections in key areas and publicize prominent issues found in the operation.

Region to open innovation centers
The Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region recently announced that it will establish 20 startup and innovation centers featuring influential and reputable business brands during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20). To date, the governments of the cities of Nanning, Chongzuo and Qinzhou have rolled out their implementation plans, while Liuzhou and Guilin still have theirs in the pipeline. Nanning's plan focuses on information technology, healthcare and smart manufacturing, Chongzuo's will make full use of its close ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations members and Qinzhou's operation will feature ceramics businesses.

Illegal drug cases investigated in H1
The Guangdong Food and Drug Administration, in cooperation with other government agencies, investigated more than 13,410 illegal drug cases across the province in the first half of this year. In 2017, the provincial administration has signed an agreement on food and drug safety management with multiple large online businesses to ensure that their trading platforms are held accountable in related dealings. They have also cooperated more in data sharing, investigations and the fight against counterfeiting.

Supreme Court supports island
The Supreme People's Court announced earlier this month that it will support Hainan to found a division of a local court dedicated to intellectual property cases and to establish an international IP trading center. The supreme court encourages local judicial teams to promote an open, fair market environment. The move is in response to a policy issued by the State Council in April to support Hainan's comprehensive reforms and opening-up.

Province leads on Tibetan medicine
Qinghai, one of the largest producing areas for traditional Tibetan medicine across China, saw vigorous development in the industry in 2017, local authorities said. The province's output value of Tibetan medicine reached 2.6 billion yuan ($380 million) last year, accounting for 44 percent of the industry's total nationwide. Qinghai has more than 1,290 types of Tibetan medicine and grows about 200,000 hectares of herbs across the region. It is home to 19 Tibetan medicine pharmaceutical companies in the plateau region, and about 210 herbal therapies have been approved for manufacturing pharmaceutical products.
