This Day, That Year

Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.
When foreign beverage giants entered the domestic market in the 1980s, some major Chinese brands, such as Chongqing's Tianfu Cola and Beijing's Beibingyang, almost disappeared from store shelves.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, Tianfu Cola was the largest soft drink maker in China and dominated the market with a 75 percent penetration. It also gained market recognition in Russia and the United States.
