On June 27, 2012, the country's first manned deepsea submersible, Jiaolong, reached its deepest depth - 7,062 meters - in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean.
Its mission highlighted the country's capacity to explore 99.8 percent of the ocean floor.
