US withdrawal from UN's human rights body draws rebukes, regrets

By Chen Weihua and Wang Qingyun | China Daily | Updated: 2018-06-21 07:48

The United States has drawn both regrets and rebukes from around the world for its Tuesday decision to quit the United Nations Human Rights Council, the latest move by the Trump administration to abandon multilateral bodies and agreements.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley announced the decision on Tuesday at the State Department, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at her side.

Haley accused the council of refusing to heed US demands for reform. "For too long, the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias," she said.
