This Day, That Year

Editor's Note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.

Adopted on April 4, 1990, by the National People's Congress and implemented on July 1, 1997, the Basic Law is the constitutional document of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

July 1 marked the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return from British rule and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region under the guidelines of "one country, two systems" and "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong".
