'Hawkish' new adviser installed by Trump
US President Donald Trump has replaced his national security adviser HR McMaster with former UN ambassador John Bolton, continuing a personnel shake-up in the White House that some perceive is taking his foreign policy in a more hawkish direction.
Trump's announcement on Thursday followed his firing of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state through Twitter a little more than a week ago, replacing him with Mike Pompeo, the current chief of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Bolton is a conservative and hard-line official on international issues and the move shows Trump is surrounding himself with advisers more likely to agree with his views and taking his foreign policy in a more hawkish direction, said Fan Jishe, a senior fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
