Bad meat bad news for Canelo

China Daily | Updated: 2018-03-07 07:36

LOS ANGELES - Mexican middleweight Canelo Alvarez, prepping for a May 5 title rematch with champion Gennady Golovkin, tested positive for banned clenbuterol on the weekend.

His promoters blamed tainted meat for the test result.

Alvarez had trace amounts of the drug in his system and Golden Boy Promotions said in a statement on Monday the level was "consistent with meat contamination that has impacted dozens of athletes in Mexico in recent years".
