This Day, That Year

China Daily | Updated: 2017-11-21 08:05

Item from Nov 21, 1984, in China Daily: A retired engineer from Germany who has become the first foreigner to run a State-owned enterprise in China, is already helping the plant increase production. Werner Gerich, 65, has been granted all the powers of a Chinese director, including the right to hire and transfer employees. He runs the Wuhan Diesel Engine Plant.

After Gerich's successful work in China in the 1980s, thousands of expats have chosen to work in China.

To honor his commitment, a memorial statue was erected in Wuhan, Hubei province, on April 17, 2005, to mark the second anniversary of his death.
