People: Online English training platform goes public abroad

Mute English - the phenomenon of people being able to read and understand English as a second language but not speak it well - is an ongoing issue for Chinese children and their parents. To help learners get over this hurdle, Huang Jiajia, founded 51Talk, an online English training platform. Huang graduated from Tsinghua University in 2007 and since then has closely observed the dynamics of the English-learning market in China. In 2011, Huang set up 51Talk, and in June the company was officially listed on the New York Stock Exchange, becoming the first domestic company in online education to go public abroad.
