Flooding, landslide death toll rises
The death toll from landslides and heavy rain triggered by a tropical depression in Vietnam has climbed to 68, with another 34 people missing, officials said on Sunday. The Vietnam Disaster Management Authority said in a statement that the disasters have also injured 32 people, damaged infrastructure and killed more than 230,000 livestock in central and northern regions.

Weinstein expelled from academy
Hollywood movie maker Harvey Weinstein was expelled on Saturday from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in response to his alleged sexual advances on female coworkers. The 54-member board of governors of the academy held a special emergency meeting on Saturday and voted to expel the movie mogul.

Presidential polls kick off
Voting in presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan kicked off early on Sunday. The Central Election Commission said around 3 million citizens were eligible to vote for their future leader at 2,375 polling stations, including 37 outside the country. A total of 11 candidates are competing for the presidency after two of 13 registered candidates withdrew.

Freighter sinks off coast; 10 missing
A Hong Kong-registered freighter sank in rough seas off the Philippine coast, leaving 10 crewmembers missing, Japan's coast guard said. It said a distress call was received early on Friday from the 33,205-ton Emerald Star from a location about 280 kilometers off the Philippines' eastern coast. It said 26 crewmembers, all Indians, were aboard.
