Item from Oct 12, 1984, in China Daily: The "Yellow Dragon" desert in northwestern China is being tamed after a 35-year tree-planting program.

Land now forested by man totals 48,993 hectares, 36 times the area before 1949. China has made remarkable progress in combating desertification, with about 30 million hectares of desert in the country turning green in the past five years.

A total of 11.6 billion trees have been planted since 2012, according to the State Forestry Administration.
