Chinese human rights officials in British visit

A delegation from the China Foundation for Human Rights Development, led by its president Huang Mengfu, visited the United Kingdom from Sept 26 to 28.

Huang, former vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, spoke to members of British Parliament and human rights experts about China's economic and social development and the latest progress on human rights.

As the largest developing country in the world, he said, China regards development as its top priority, and the right to subsistence and development as the most important human right.

Because China has a different social system, different development levels and different traditions, it is normal that it has different views on human rights, Huang said.

Therefore, rather than accusing and preaching, there should be a mutual promotion and development of human rights between countries, through dialogue, exchanges and cooperation.

The British side said it is necessary and beneficial for the two countries to communicate on the subject.

Before the UK visit, the delegation traveled to the Czech Republic from Sept 24 to 25.
