Video: Farmers beat poverty to harvest a better future

Villagers have been farming the barren soil of a mountainous area of the Ningxia Hui autonomous region for generations. Yields were often, it seemed, "decided by fate" and seemed to mock their years' hard work. In the latest episode of the Good Luck China series of short videos, China Daily's Greg Fountain visited a vineyard in Minning town in Ningxia to see how the locals beat the scourge of poverty. According to the Minning township government, per capita annual income rose from 500 yuan ($75) in 1997 to 10,732 yuan in 2016, easily beating the average rural residential income.
