China Daily | Updated: 2017-09-12 07:56

Item from Sept 12, 1986, in China Daily: China's first International Book Fair closed in Beijing yesterday.

Organized by the China National Publications Import and Export Corporation, the weeklong event was described as "a big success", and displayed 50,000 books covering science, education, economics and culture, attracting exhibitors from about 1,000 publishing houses from 35 countries and regions.

Thirty years after it was founded in 1986, the Beijing International Book Fair has become the world's second-largest book fair in scale, and is turning into an international reading festival instead of merely a platform for copyright trade.
