Remains are those of missing teacher

By Cai Hong in Tokyo | China Daily | Updated: 2017-08-31 07:41

A DNA test of the remains of a young woman confirmed that they belonged to Wei Qiujie, a Chinese teacher missing in Japan's northernmost region of Hokkaido since July 23, according to the Chinese consulate-general in Sapporo, Japan, on Wednesday.

A local fisherman found the remains on a beach in Kushiro on the northern island of Hokkaido on Sunday morning. An autopsy revealed she died of drowning, local police said.

"When I saw the body, I immediately thought it was the (missing Chinese) woman whose image has repeatedly been shown on TV," the fisherman, who called police immediately, told local media.
