Former PM Hata dies at 82
Former Japanese prime minister Tsutomu Hata died of natural causes at his home in Tokyo on Monday at the age of 82. Hata was first elected to the lower house in 1969 from a constituency in Nagano Prefecture. He went on to be reelected 13 times. Between April and June 1994 he headed a coalition government while he was leading the defunct Japan Renewal Party. Yuichiro Hata, his son, is currently an upper house lawmaker with the main opposition Democratic Party.

Guru jailed amid intense security
An Indian court on Monday sentenced a controversial spiritual leader to 10 years in prison for raping two of his devotees, days after his followers went on a rampage that left 38 dead. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, 50, had been convicted on Friday of raping the two women at the headquarters of his popular Dera Sacha Sauda sect in the northern state of Haryana, in a case dating back more than 15 years.

Nurse suspect in 84 more killings
A German nurse jailed for murdering two patients is suspected of killing at least 84 other people, police said on Monday. The man known as Niels H. under reporting rules admitted deliberately injecting patients at two clinics in northern Germany with deadly drugs in 2015. Investigators uncovered the additional murder cases after digging up the remains of 134 people with links to the man, police said.

8 climbers die in Alps accidents
Eight mountain climbers have died in three different accidents this weekend in the Austrian and Italian Alps. The Austrian Red Cross said five mountain climbers died on Sunday in the Austrian Alps in Wildgerlostal on Mount Gabler, while three Italian climbers also died after falling into a crevasse.
