The fine art of 'fishermen paintings'

By Yan Yiqi | China Daily | Updated: 2014-10-09 08:13

It was a sunny afternoon and locals in Nandong village in Zhoushan of East China's Zhejiang province were taking a painting lesson given by Zhang Gaojun.

Unlike normal art classes that charge tuition fees, Zhang's lectures are given for free to the villagers. The themes of the paintings mostly reflect their daily lives - scenes of the docks and women at fish markets.

After the villagers finish painting, they bring the works home, but Zhang picks some outstanding images to develop into small commodities including cardholders, cushions, vases and scarves. These products will become tourism souvenirs sold in scenic spots of Zhoushan.
