"It is nothing new for the younger generation of migrant workers, especially those from third- or forth-tier cities or counties, to use smartphones for everyday activities. Their phones are usually top brands and of high quality.

The workers use their phones primarily to watch entertainment programs, download music, play games, and for social networking, during which they tend to contact strangers outside their own lives.

Unlike members of mainstream society, they have few real connections with other people, so their main point of contact is through the various groups they join on the Internet. However, they are aware that this isn't real life in the accepted sense, and only get involved to avoid feelings of boredom and loneliness.
