Private foundations now outnumber public

There are now more private foundations than public ones for the first time, said the China Foundation Center. The nongovernmental philanthropic information provider said there are 1,324 private foundations operating in China, 131 more than the number of public foundations.

Figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs show the number of private foundations increased from 253 in 2005 to 1,065 in 2010. The number of public foundations increased about 300 during the same period. The revenue of private foundations increased to more than 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) over the last year. The revenues mainly came from donations, investments and government departments' grants, said Xinhua News Agency.
