Emergence of vintage clothes shows new trend

I was surprised the first time I asked a Chinese friend where to find second-hand clothing stores in Beijing. My Chinese friend was horrified. Chinese people would never wear someone else's old clothes, I was told. But that's not true, I later learned.

Vintage clothes have been a trend in big cities throughout the United States and Europe for decades, and China's capital has also embraced the trend with stores like Mega Mega Vintage in Beijing's Dongcheng district.

I have shopped alongside Beijingers who also like to scour Panjiayuan Market, an outdoor antiques market, for old belts, purses, hats and embroidered pieces that will be dusted off and cleaned to accessorize a modern wardrobe. Locals also like to shop on the Internet, finding vintage wear at online stores.
