Torre to retire, Mattingly in

China Daily | Updated: 2010-09-19 08:00

LOS ANGELES - Joe Torre is grateful he can leave the Los Angeles Dodgers on his own terms and schedule.

That's something the New York Yankees didn't exactly allow their beloved manager to do three years ago, but a revitalizing stint with the Dodgers permitted Torre to put the proper finish on his career.

Torre said on Friday he will retire at the end of the season, although the 70-year-old skipper couldn't say with certainty that he'll never manage again. The Dodgers immediately announced hitting coach Don Mattingly will replace him in 2011.
