DILLINGHAM, Alaska - Former Republican Senator Ted Stevens, Alaska's most revered political figure, was confirmed dead on Wednesday after his plane slammed into a remote mountain, killing four others and injuring three.

Stevens, known as "Uncle Ted", had been on part of a fishing trip on Monday when the flight experienced sudden fog and rain conditions in southwest Alaska.

The passengers included Sean O'Keefe, the former head of NASA and his teenage son, both of whom survived.
