Hello, my concubines
Tang Concubines, which plays at the Century Theater until July 26, tells the story of the two famous concubines from the Tang Dynasty - Wu Zetian and Yang Yuhuan. Wu eventually became the only empress of China in history, while Yang sacrificed her life at the tender age of 38 to save both the kingdom and the emperor she loved, who was nearly twice her age.
The Terracotta Warriors, another highly-anticipated show, will run at the Beizhan Theater from August 19 to 23. It tells the story of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang, from the beginning of his reign, through key historic episodes, to his burial alongside the huge army of terracotta warriors that protect his tomb. Told through the eyes of the emperor's beloved concubine and eunuch Zhao Gao, it chronicles conquests, battles, forbidden love, ruthlessness, progress and innovation.
Both shows feature fight sequences intertwined with scenes of romance and betrayal. Chinese composer Hao Weiya composed the music for both shows. In Hao's scores, sweeping Western harmonies are laced with the extraordinary color and lyricism of Chinese melodies.
