Setting the record straight on the 'glory' of wealth

Lively discussion is going on here about what the next steps should be to further improve China's economic and social development. The arguments are heated and important.

What impels me to take up my pen (sit down at my computer keyboard) is a visit from a foreign friend demanding to know why Deng Xiaoping, in an interview with Mike Wallace in 1986, allegedly said "to get rich is glorious" ?

The fact is, he didn't. Wallace did. What Deng said was: "To get rich is no sin." He then went on to patiently elaborate:
