Fewer killed in disasters: Minister

A total of 310 million people have been affected by natural disasters this year, the minister of civil affairs said yesterday. But thanks to improved emergency response systems, far fewer people have lost their lives.

Without revealing the actual death toll, Minister of Civil Affairs Li Xueju said at a press conference that while the number of people affected by natural disasters was up 9.4 percent on last year, the death toll was down 34.8 percent.
