It is a good time to escape from Beijing in August when the whole city is grasped by heat and moisture. And there's no better place to flee to than to Inner Mongolia, the vast grassland only 300 kilometers north of the capital.

It takes around 5 hours by car from Beijing to Lanqi Banner of Xinlin Gol League of Inner Mongolia, where you can enjoy the scenery of grassland and mysterious sand dunes. The road to Lanqi is dead straight. You just keep driving northward following the signals.

There are only a few three-star hotels over the Shangdu town of Lanqi and accommodation costs between 400 and 500 yuan ($50-60) per night. The famous Kublai Khan's imperial palace relic is only 20 minutes away.
