Sowing seeds of magic

A scene from The Secret of the Magic Gourd, in which a boy is indulged by an animated gourd, as if by a doting parent.

A Hong Kong film executive's 10-year search for a quintessentially Chinese tale to bring to children ended in the somewhat unlikely form of a squash-like vegetable. Centro Digital Pictures boss John Chu took the classic story of a magic gourd to Disney, and it became the first Chinese-language release to be branded by the animation juggernaut.

The Secret of the Magic Gourd (Baohulu de Mimi) opens in the country's cinemas this weekend, marking a realization of Disney's localization strategy, according to the company.

Based on a Chinese work by the late established children's literature writer, Zhang Tianyi (1906-85), the film is a mix of live action and computer animation.
