Beef up Chinese at school-level

The authorities should attach more importance to Chinese language courses in primary and high schools rather than at university level, to improve the learning of Chinese, says a commentary in Jiangnan Metropolis News. An excerpt follows:

According to a latest suggestion by the Ministry of Education, universities and colleges should open Chinese language courses for their students.

Several well-known universities have listed Chinese as a compulsory course for their students. A teacher with Peking University has even said students will not be able to earn their degrees if they failed their Chinese course, according to media reports.
