Zoo's race to save rare turtle from extinction
An 80-year-old rare spotted turtle thought to be one of five left in the world will be sent from its home at Changsha Zoo in Hunan's provincial capital to Suzhou Zoo in Jiangsu Province to match it with a potential mate during the Spring mating season.
The turtle, which is 80 centimeters long and 50 centimeters wide, weighs more than 40 kilograms, and comes from Huangpu River in east China. It has been living in the zoo for more than 50 years. The China Association of Wildlife Protection requested the zoo find a mate to save the rare species, which international zoologists believe could be the only living female spotted turtle left alive.
