Student anger at school's 'Big Brother' cameras

A senior high school in Shenzhen's Longgang District has sparked controversy after it installed 'Big Brother' type closed-circuit TV cameras in all the classrooms and playgrounds, the first school in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Guangdong Province to do so.

Many students have complained that their privacy had been violated and that having lessons was like serving a jail term. But the headmaster surnamed Cen said the security cameras aimed to further improve the school's management and standardize student behavior. Local lawyers said the school had done nothing wrong provided it did not install cameras in the school's toilets and bathrooms.

Desperate and dateless seek professional help

Marriage headhunters are the new big thing in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, where desperate and dateless high income white-collars unable to find a husband or wife, get a professional to do the legwork for them.

A special marriage headhunting company in Guangzhou's Tianhe District has so far collected more than 100 resumes of single people wanting to find a potential spouse, while even more have made enquiries to the company via phone and email. The headhunting company said marriage headhunting companies have a bright future, because it believes the number of single people in the city is growing rapidly.

People smugglers getting younger

Five illegal immigrants were caught on a sampan by Macao customs officers on Sunday morning. The human smugglers, or the "snakeheads", turned out to be two teenage boys aged 14 and 15. The motor sampan was intercepted when it approached land about 12:25 am on Sunday. Four men and one woman, from Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces, were found onboard along with the two boys. The adults said that they each paid the two boys up to 3,000 yuan ($389), who took them from Zhuhai to Macao.

Macao customs said that it is the first time they have caught underage "snakeheads" and it may be a new ploy of the people smuggling syndicates.
