Equal rights for disabled

China Daily | Updated: 2007-04-03 06:58

It is vital to enhance implementation in protecting the rights of people with disabilities, says an editorial in Beijing News. An excerpt follows:

Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Wang Guangya signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities last Friday. More than 80 states signed the treaty to indicate their resolve to protect the rights of the world's 650 million people with disabilities. The treaty aims to ensure that people with disabilities enjoy equal rights and opportunities with the rest of the world.

The significance of the convention lies in consensus of UN nations on the protection of disadvantaged groups and a commitment to implement this protection as an international law when controversies remain in the definitions and categories of human rights.
