CCTV top taxpayer

China Central Television (CCTV) was the biggest taxpayer in Beijing in 2006, according to the Beijing Municipal Taxation Bureau. Last year, 74 enterprises in Beijing paid over 100 million yuan in taxes each, 34 more than in 2005, said the bureau.

On the top 1,000 taxpayers' list, 70 percent are from the property, service and financial industries. A total of 23 property enterprises in Beijing paid over 100 million yuan in taxes last year.

New oil reserve

A commercial oil reserve base will be built inside the Yangpu economic development zone in Hainan Province. The base will be able to store 10 million tons of petroleum, according to Ding Shangqing, director of the Yangpu Economic Development Zone.

Project developer China Petrochemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, is negotiating with a number of oil companies from the Middle East over funding for the oil reserve.
