Favre set for NFL workouts after ankle surgery

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: Brett Favre, American football's all-time completions leader, underwent left ankle surgery on Monday but is not expected to miss any off-season workouts for the Green Bay Packers.

The 37-year-old quarterback considered retirement for the second year in a row before telling the Packers earlier this month that he would return for his 16th season with the club, one where he could shatter career passing records.

The only three-time Most Valuable Player in National Football League history needs only one more victory to match John Elway as the league's all-time winningest quarterback with his 148th triumph.

Favre, who has completed an NFL record 5,021 passes, is second on the NFL career passing yardage list with 57,500 and second in touchdown passes with 414. Retired Miami Dolphins star Dan Marino is the leader in both areas.

Nakamura breaks hand

GLASGOW: Celtic's Shunsuke Nakamura has broken a bone in his left hand, the club's official website said on Monday.

The Japan midfielder sustained the injury during the Hoops dramatic 2-1 Scottish Cup quarter-final win away to Inverness on Sunday, where two late goals booked the Glasgow giants' place in the last four.

Celtic are set to issue an update on Nakamura's fitness later in the week.

The reigning Scottish champions and current leaders have a home league fixture against Dunfermline at Parkhead on Saturday before heading to Italy for the second leg of their Champions League tie against AC Milan on Wednesday, March 7.

Hincapie likely to miss Paris-Roubaix race

LOS ANGELES: George Hincapie, the US cyclist who broke his left wrist in the Tour of California last weekend, is unlikely to compete in the Paris-Roubaix race, Discovery Channel team manager Johan Bruyneel said.

Hincapie underwent surgery on Sunday to have a plate inserted in the wrist he injured during Saturday's sixth stage of the Tour of California.

"The surgery went well, straightforward and no complications," Bruyneel said. "Now we just have to wait and see how he recovers."

April's Paris-Roubaix, featuring cobblestones, is probably going to be too much too soon for Hincapie's recovery, Bruyneel said.

Kuerten continues injury comeback with victory

LAS VEGAS: Former world No 1 Gustavo Kuerten earned his first hard court victory for 18 months when he booked a place in the round-robin section of the Las Vegas Open on Monday.

The 30-year-old Brazilian, who played just one match last year following hip surgery, made light of gusting winds to beat South African Wesley Moodie 6-4, 7-5 and seal his second win in three tour matches this year.

Kuerten, three-times French Open champion, dropped out of the world's top 1,000 before bouncing back to 804th after winning a match at the Brazil Open this month.

He will join German Benjamin Becker and Czech Jan Hernych in one of the eight round-robin groups, with the group winners then progressing to the quarter-finals.
