Every year at this time, the country's scientific and technological elite come together to review and celebrate the achievements of the past year.

President Hu Jintao's presentation of awards, as well as the attendance of three other members of the Communist Party of China's Political Bureau, was symbolic of the leadership's high hopes for science and technology to propel the nation's march toward modernity.
