Nanjing Rd plan inappropriate

By Chen Weihua | China Daily | Updated: 2007-02-15 07:02

Visitors to Shanghai's Nanjing Road, the country's No1 shopping street, will find it has lost more of its unique character later this year.

Under a government plan, 150-year-old Nanjing Road will witness a "high elevation" of retailers along the street, which is to be revamped as "China's Fifth Avenue", referring to the famous shopping street in New York City.

In fact, many retailers along the street have already been notified that their leases will not be renewed so that the government renovation plan can be carried out, according to a Chinese Business report.
