I wouldn't leave DPRK for $1b: US defector

China Daily | Updated: 2007-01-30 07:33

The last US defector to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) who crossed a minefield to reach the country nearly 45 years ago said he felt at home there and would not leave for a billion dollars.

Joe Dresnok spoke to two British filmmakers about his decision after his wife divorced him and he was about to be court-martialed to cross the mine-filled border dividing the South and the North in 1962.

"I was fed up with my childhood, my marriage, my military life, everything. I was finished. There's only one place to go," Dresnok told the filmmakers in an interview shown on CBS television's 60 Minutes program on Sunday.
