West's impact

China Daily | Updated: 2007-01-10 06:31

I see two points here:

First, this discussion is in a long tradition of how to deal with the impact of the West. Dating at least as far back as to the 19th century, China has been discussing her Westernization vs maintaining her own traditions, some of the most influential Chinese scholars took part in those debates. We see that sort of ongoing discussion ever since. So it's not new but the speed and extent of the Christmas and overall Western culture hype are somewhat frightening.

Second, in my eyes that hype is just a sign of superficial understanding of both your own and the foreign culture. Who among all the disco party people really know what Christmas is about? I bet the same people have no idea about their own Chinese culture. Whenever I ask young Chinese about their own classical literature, arts, music, about the whole of Chinese culture of the past, I just get stumbled looks. Everybody seems to uphold some sort of pride in China's glorious past, but that's so empty since most are not even able to explain what they are proud of.
