Former PM joins cabinet

Former Fiji Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, ousted and held hostage seven years ago, joined a military-appointed cabinet yesterday with elections seen as far as a year away after the South Pacific nation's bloodless coup.

Chaudhry, deposed while serving in government in two of Fiji's four coups since 1987, was sworn in as finance minister in the interim government led by military commander Frank Bainimarama.
