Heavy snow bogs down expressway traffic in SW China

Cars are seen moving slowly on the Ganhaizi bridge, a part of the Yaxi Expressway, Southwest China's Sichuan province on Feb 24, 2017, due to the more than two days of heavy snow. In some parts of the expressway, the snow has been as deep as about 50 centimeters. Traffic controls have been imposed in the Yaxi Expressway because of the continual snow. [Photo/VCG]

Launched in 2007, the Yaxi Expressway project became operable in 2012 and cost $3.3 billion. Made up of 270 viaducts and 25 tunnels, it runs through Ya'an to Xicang, Sichuan province, providing better access for Sichuan to North and South China. With a scenic drive, it also serves as a major tourist attraction.
