China urged Japan on Friday to correct its erroneous words and actions related to the Taiwan question, saying Tokyo bears full responsibility for the serious difficulties in bilateral relations.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun was responding to a question about a year after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made remarks in parliament suggesting that a Taiwan contingency could justify Japanese military intervention.
Guo said the Japanese leader's remarks blatantly sent a wrong signal of attempted military intervention in the Taiwan question, challenged China's sovereignty and undermined the political foundation of bilateral relations.
It was a pity that a year later, Japanese authorities were still evading the issue and had shown neither sincerity nor action in reflecting on and correcting their mistakes, he said.
Guo stressed that China's position on relations with Japan remains consistent.
Japan's immediate priority is to correct its erroneous words and actions related to the Taiwan question, he said, adding that it must adopt a correct attitude toward historical issues and, fundamentally, develop an objective and rational understanding of China.
