The report was unveiled at the China-Island Countries Ocean Cooperation Forum, held from Tuesday to Wednesday in Pingtan, an island county-level city in Fujian province. The event gathered around 180 delegates — including government officials, marine authorities, international organization representatives, and scholars from over 20 nations — to drive regional ocean cooperation.
The forum also launched the List of China-Island Countries Marine Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Cooperation Initiatives (2026-28). The document targets themes including environmental observation, disaster early warning, ecosystem restoration, blue economy growth, and capacity building to fully upgrade Pacific island ocean governance.
During the forum, foreign delegates conducted field investigations across Pingtan to observe the island's ecological protection, marine research, and green development practices.
Hiria Ottino, president of the Pacific-China Friendship Association, said that Pingtan's Keqiutou relics reveal deep ancestral links between coastal China and Pacific populations and the ancient bond provides a rock-solid foundation for cooperation.
Penikoni Aleamotu'a, founder of the Tonga Citizen Science Initiative, said, "This is my first time in Pingtan, and I am impressed by its massive scale. Most trees here are highly reminiscent of my hometown, and the ecosystem so closely mirrors the South Pacific that I feel right at home."
